直接手球に触れ、
スピードやスピン、タッチ感など
プレイヤーの意志を伝える重要なパーツ、
「タップ」（Tip）。
タップには長年「革」（豚・牛など）が
用いられてきました。
その後、2000年前後から
主にブレイクキューや
ジャンプキュー用として高硬度の
「樹脂」が使われるようになりました。
今回紹介するタップも
広い意味では樹脂ですが、
「化学の専門家が成分配合をした
高反発性の樹脂製（ウレタン反応）」
であることと、
ポケットキューで言うところの
「プレーキュー用」に
開発されたタップであることが、
大きなポイント。
タップ＝革というビリヤード界の
常識を超えて、パラダイムシフトを
起こすかもしれない
メイドインジャパンの新タップです。
その名は『YUME』（ユメ）。
2022年3月上旬に
新シリーズが登場しました。
A cue tip is a sole part of a cue stick to contact with a cue ball. The part is essential for applying spin, adjusting speed, giving feedback of a shot, in other words, transferring player’s will to a cue ball.
Cue tips have been made of leather (cowhide, pigskin etc.) since last centuries. Then, around Y2K, high hardness resin composite cue tips for break/jump cues invented. However, a paradigm shift might be happened on cue tips this year. The “YUME”, a whole new cue tip that is made in Japan, released on early March, 2022.
The cue tip is made from “plastic” in general meaning, but there are differences from other products by two reasons. it made from high impact resilience plastic (Polyurethane) blended by an expert of chemical, and it intends for a cue for play, not for jump/break.

『YUME―P15』と『YUME―P20』
ともに、かなり黒に近い
ブラウン単色のワンデザイン。
天面はツルツルしていてYUMEのロゴ入り。
底面（接着面）は
ざらざらした仕上げになっています。
プレーンな見た目と指で掴んだ感触から
従来品とは異なる新素材感を覚えます。
『YUME』を開発したのは、
ハイグレードシリコンを使用した
キューグリップ『シルグリップ』で
知られるフレーマーフレーマー社。
代表取締役の田邊明彦氏は
開発の原点について、
「『経時変化しないタップ』『常に状態と性質が一定なタップ』を作りたいと思ったのが出発点です」と語ります。
Both “YUME-P15” and “YUME-P20” have the same appearance, its base color is Dark Brown. The “YUME” logo is printed on its smooth top surface, and bottom side has coarse surface. Its appearance and a feel of touch are totally different from conventional cue tips.
The inventor/manufacturer, Framer.Framer Co., Ltd, is well known for “Sill Grip”, a cue wrap made from high-grade silicon.
Akihiko Tanabe, the president of the company says,
“I wanted to create a cue tip that don’t change over time, stable for its character and condition. That was the start point.”

革という自然材料を用いて
作られたタップは、
製法や構造をどんなに工夫しても、
繰り返される衝撃や摩耗による
変質・劣化から逃れられません。
「安定したピーク」の期間は
それほど長くはないのです。
「現代のビリヤードでは、クッションは速くなり、ボールはプラスティックになり、キューもハイテク化し……と道具は強靭で安定したものへと進化しています。ですが、タップはその流れから遅れていて、革製品ゆえの個体差や不安定さ、寿命の短さがより浮き彫りになってきているように感じられました。そこで『シルグリップ』と同じく、何か新しいタップの『規格』が作れないだろうか。そう考えて、2011年頃に試作めいたことに着手したのが『YUME』のスタート地点です。その後、製品化が見えてきたのは2019年頃でした」（田邊氏）
田邊氏は、
化学の専門家をパートナーに招き、
化学技術的アプローチで試作をし、
プレーテストを繰り返しました。
「パートナーは化学分野のプロ中のプロ。化学反応式を見ながら成分を調整し、タップに求められる性質を突き詰めていきました。40～50種類ぐらいの材料を自前で調達したでしょうか。時間や予算もかなりかかっています。パートナーの知見と基礎実験設備がなければYUMEは生まれていませんので、タッグを組めたことは幸運でした」（田邊氏）
A leather tip is made of natural material, cannot avoid from change of performance, worsened in quality by repeating impacts and frictional wear. Best condition cannot be kept for long period.
Mr. Tanabe continues, “In modern pool and billiards, equipment is being improved. For example, faster cushion, resin balls, low deflection shafts. I noticed a cue tip is unstable, short lifetime and its quality varies. I thought cue tips were left behind just because they are made of natural material, leather. I mean, some facts, cue tips have individual difference, unstable quality, short lifetime and so on, are obvious. Sometime in 2011, I made up my mind to establish a new ‘standard’ of cue tip, then started to experiment. That’s the beginning, In 2019, I felt we might go into a production phase.”
Mr. Tanabe contracted with an expert of chemical, they experimented from chemical aspect and repeated test shots.
About the partner, Mr. Tanabe explains, “The partner is a true professional of chemical. We checked chemical formulas, adjust materials, to find chemistry that would fit a cue tip. We consumed considerable time and budget. For example, I purchased 40 to 50 kinds of materials. I was lucky enough to establish the partnership with the expert because he has ample knowledge and a laboratory for primary experiment. If he was not, the YUME cue tip won’t be invented.”

そうして2020年に生まれたのが、
『YUME version1』と
『YUME KIBO』という
第一・第二世代商品。
そこからフィードバックを得て
さらなるブラッシュアップを施したのが
今回の『YUME―P15』と
『YUME―P20』です。
余談ですが、
開発時に基準にしたタップデータは、
とある国産著名革タップのものだとのこと。
つまり、『YUME』が
志向する性質・性能は
現代タップのスタンダードから
大きくかけ離れたものではありません。
「YUME開発の初期はタップの形はしていても性能は全く未熟で、手球が真っ直ぐ転がらない、打感が悪い、球離れが速すぎるというものでした。そこから研究を重ね、『YUME―P15』と『YUME―P20』では、課題だったドローショットのパワー不足も克服でき、完璧と言うつもりはありませんが、様々な項目で必要十分な性能を生み出すことができました。ポケット・キャロム両競技のプロやハイアマにも試打をしていただき、良い評価をいただいています」（田邊氏）
In 2020, “YUME version 1” and the second version “YUME KIBO” were released. After that, Mr. Tanabe gathered feedbacks about the first two versions from customers, set a leather cue tip manufactured by a domestic maker as a benchmark, continued testing and improving.
“The early versions of YUME cue tip were just dome shaped pieces.” Mr. Tanabe confesses.
“The cue ball did not roll straight when hit, a contact time was too short, hard to apply draw spin, bad hitting feel, etc.” But he continued experiment. “I could overcome the issues at last. I have pretty confident about the P15 and P20. I’d rather not to say they are perfect, but their overall performance is satisfied. I have received positive comments from pros and advanced amateurs of both pool and billiards.” That is how the YUME-P15 and P20 were born.

『YUME』の利点、すなわち
『天然皮革ではないタップ』の利点とは
どんなところなのでしょうか。
「やはり『いつも同じ状態』『手間いらず』というところです。革製タップは最低限のメンテナンスが求められますし、ある一定期間に発揮できる最高のパフォーマンスを求めて『タップを育てる』という方が今も多くおられます。そうすると常にタップのコンディションに気を使い続けなければなりません。タップ交換の頻度も高くなるでしょう。それに比べると、YUMEは一回セットしたら常に一定の性能を保つことができるのがメリットです。タップの状態を気にしたり、タップの状態に合わせてストロークを微調整する必要がほとんどないので、ゲームに集中できます」（田邉氏）
ゲーム中、例えばキューミスなど
なんらかのミスをした時、
ボールの転がりや
打感に違和感を覚えた時、
タップの変質・劣化を疑う人は
少なくありません。
ですが、『YUME』は
変質・劣化することがあまりないので、
疑念の対象から外せます。
「悪いのはタップではなく
自分のショット再現性なのかも」
ということです。
そして、革製タップのように
「側面が膨むこと」や
「パンク」する心配がないので
メンテナンスに傾ける労力が
かなり少なくなるのも利点です。
加えて、製品寿命が革製タップより長く、
個体差がない（当たり外れがない）ため、
交換頻度は低くなります。
「まさにそれもメリットの一つです。製品寿命を伸ばすことで廃棄頻度を減らし、有限な資源を有効活用できます。エコロジーにも配慮しています」（田邊氏）
So, what is the advantage of YUME cue tips, in other words, cue tips made from non-natural material?
Mr. Tanabe answers,
“First of all, it’s stable and maintenance-free. A leather cue tip needs maintenance, some players even tune-up it for better performance. It’s OK, but they always have to care or be worried about the cue tip. Frequency of replacement is a major factor of course. Once YUME cue tip is installed, players will free from them, concentrate on a game because our product keeps same performance for a longer time.”
During a game, when a player makes mistake or feels uncomfortable with a shot, he/she may doubt of problems about cue tip, but if the cue tip is YUME, there is rarely need to consider about it because of its stability. The player can concentrate on every shot, not on the tip.
Leather tips may mushroom, its fibers may become disentangled, but they never happen on the YUME cue tip. Reducing time and cost for maintenance is also one of advantages.
In addition, replace frequency is lower because it last longer than leather cue tip and no individual difference among products,
Mr. Tanabe replies, “Yes, that is one of advantages of the YUME. A longevity of the product reduces waste and we can use limited resources effectively. Also, it will contribute for ecology movement.”
